Individuals who are happy at work have
a tendency to enjoy life greater and have better wellbeing, stronger associations
and a higher sense of purpose. They likewise have a huge positive effect on the
organizations they work for; evidence reveals that happier employees are highly
committed, creative & productive towards their organization.

Organizations around industry, presumably,
try to enhance employee’s happiness with the aim to accomplish greater
profitability & company value. Very little is known about the happiness of
people at work in Dubai. Research is needed to understand the current situation
of workplace happiness of employees in Dubai.

This abstract explores the workplace happiness of employees
based on a survey conducted at various malls and city centers in Dubai, in
December 2017.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Methodology

 

Personal Questionnaire method was used to have a face-to-face
questionnaire with the respondent.

The first steps of our survey was to frame light and less
complicated questionnaire so that our respondents have a better understanding
of what is being asked from them and also save a lot of their valuable time .
The questionnaire was constructed to measure the happiness employees have at
work in Dubai.

 

Space boundary means the area that we have covered for the
survey. In this survey, the scope was to survey people at malls and city centers.
We conducted the survey at Mirdif city centre, Dubai Marina Mall, Dubai
Festival city Mall, Burjuman Centre and Mercato Mall, in December 2017. This
aspect focuses on the happiness of people at work.

 

Random sampling method was used in the process.  A sample of 24 random people was considered
for the survey to measure happiness at work. The survey questionnaire had 15
close-Ended Questions which were very well conducted face to face.

 

Google form was used as a platform to conduct and consolidate
the entire survey results.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Survey
results

Our survey asks respondents structured questions about their
happiness at work.

Some of the questions in the survey
have been constructed especially for this purpose; the rest have been adapted
from other sources.

When answering the individual survey
questions, respondents used a 1 – 5 scale where 1 represents a negative
response to the question and 5 represents a positive response to the question.

High scorers are independently rated as happy by the
respondents and low scorers are independently rated as unhappy by the
respondents

 

Gender

 

Majority of the
respondents were male (87%) and the rest were female (13%) in the survey

 

 

Age

52%
of the respondents were of the age of 25 – 34, 22% of the respondents were of
the age of 35 – 44, 18% of the respondents were of the age 16 – 24, 4% of the
respondents were of the age 55 – 64 and the rest 4% of the respondents were of
the age 65 or above.

 

Employment
status

Majority of the
respondents were full time employed (61%), 26% of the respondents were part
time employed and the rest 13% of the respondents were employed through other
ways.

 

 

Positive feelings

When
people have good feelings about their work and the organization it does helps them
get on better together, be more able to cope up with things, be more creative and
more flexible. This all accounts to a happier work.

Considering
the job you do, in general would you say that you feel happy when you are at work?

According
to the survey, majority (87%) of the respondents feel happy when they are at work.
8.7% of the respondents were neutral. 4.3% of the respondents feel they aren’t
happy with the current job.

Enjoy work

How
much of the time you spend at work do you enjoy what you are doing?

According
to the survey, majority (74%) of the respondents enjoy what they are doing at work.
13% of the respondents were neutral. 13% of the respondents feel they aren’t enjoying
what they are doing at work.

 

Engaging
work

Having individual engaged
at work is the objective of most organizations. When employees are absorbed in
what they are doing, they can find work very motivating and rewarding.

How
much of the time you spend at work are you absorbed in what you are doing?

According
to the survey, majority (83%) of the respondents are very well absorbed in what
they are doing at work. 4.3% of the respondents were neutral. 13% of the respondents
feel they aren’t absorbed in what they are doing at work.

Motivation

Considering
the job you do, in general would you say you feel motivated to do the best you
can in your job?

According
to the survey, majority (74%) of the respondents feel motivated to do the best
in what they are doing at work. 22% of the respondents were neutral. 4.3% of
the respondents feel they aren’t motivated to do the best in what they are
doing at work.

 

Worthwhile work

When people find their
work really worthwhile and very well satisfying they find their work much more
rewarding and also reduces their absenteeism, having good employees and increases
productivity.

Considering
the job you do, in general would you say that the job you do is worthwhile?

According
to the survey, majority (65%) of the respondents find their job worthwhile. 26%
of the respondents were neutral. 9% of the respondents find their job aren’t worthwhile.

Satisfying job

 How satisfied are you with your overall job?

According
to the survey, majority (88%) of the respondents are very well  satisfied with their overall job. 4% of the
respondents are neutral. 8% of the respondents feel they aren’t satisfied with
their overall job.

 

 

 

Self expression

When people are left to
be themselves and express very well themselves at work, this helps them communicate
well with others and also makes them perform the work better.

According
to the survey, majority (74%) of the respondents feel they can be themselves at
work. 22% of the respondents are neutral. 4% of the respondents feel they can’
t be themselves at work.

How
much do the following statements apply to you: At work, I am regularly able to
do what I do best.

According
to the survey, majority (83%) of the respondents feel they are regularly able
to do what they do best. 13% of the respondents are neutral. 4% of the respondents
feel they aren’t regularly able to do what they do best.

Creativity

To
what extent do you get the chance to be creative in your job?

According
to the survey, majority (56%) of the respondents get the chance to be creative
in their job. 17% of the respondents are neutral. 26% of the respondents don’t
find the chance to be creative in their job.

 

Time work

The time work schedule in the organization also
has a very profound effect on the wellbeing of the employees at work.

Best time

Is there a specific time in the day when you find
best to work?

According
to the survey, majority (77%) of the respondents find best to work in the morning. 18% of the
respondents find best to work in the
afternoon. The remaining 5% of the respondents find best to work in the evening.

 

11.  Flexible time

Do you have access to flexible work schedules in your organization?

According
to the survey, majority (56%) of the respondents have access to flexible work schedules in their organization.
13% of the respondents are neutral. 30% of the respondents don’t have access to flexible work schedules in their organization.

 

 

Sense of progress

Having the opportunity
to do what is best and learn new skills are very important drivers of happiness
among employees.

to the survey, majority (87%) of the respondents have been able to learn new
skills at work. 9% of the respondents are neutral. 4% of the respondents feel
they have not been able to learn new skills at work.

According
to the survey, majority (79%) of the respondents find their job offering a good
prospects for progressing in their career. 17% of the respondents are neutral. 4%
of the respondents find their job aren’t offering a good prospects for
progressing in their career.

Fair pay

Considering
all my efforts and achievements at work, I feel I get paid appropriately.

According
to the survey, majority (74%) of the respondents feel they get paid
appropriately for their overall job. 22% of the respondents are neutral. 4% of
the respondents feel they aren’t being  paid appropriately for their overall job.

 

Work environment

The environment of
workplace not only forces employees to behave in certain ways; but it also influences
how they feel.

Pleasant environment

Considering
your working life, in general would you say that the surroundings and physical
conditions that you work in are pleasant?

According
to the survey, majority (83%) of the respondents find their surroundings and
physical conditions pleasant to work. 9% of the respondents are neutral. 9% of
the respondents don’t find their surroundings and physical conditions pleasant

Conclusion

 

Happy employees are an invaluable asset to any organization.
It doesn’t matter if it’s a small organization that just began to build a
reputation or if it’s a top ranking organization, the Human Capital is the
biggest capital for any organization.

As per to our survey conducted at Mirdif city centre, Dubai
Marina Mall, Dubai Festival city Mall, Burjuman Centre and Mercato Mall, and
having the result explained above we got to know that most of the employees we
surveyed found their job or work very engaging, they felt happy when they are
at work, they enjoyed what they did at work, they are very well absorbed in
what they are doing at work, they feel motivated to do the best in what they
are doing at work, they find their job worthwhile, they are very well  satisfied with their overall job, they felt
they can be themselves at work, they felt they are regularly able to do what
they do best, they get the chance to be creative in their job, they find best
to work in the morning, they have access to flexible work schedules in their
organization, they have been able to learn new skills at work, they find their
job offering a good prospects for progressing in their career, they felt they
got paid appropriately for their overall job, they found their surroundings and
physical conditions pleasant to work. Overall taking into consideration the
survey result, employees working in Dubai are happier at their work or job.
