In the novel, Lord of the Flies, the theme of savagery and wilderness versus civilization and reason is prominent throughout the novel. A handful of British boys are left stranded on a deserted island when their airplane crashes, killing all of the adults. As the boys discover that they are alone on a isolated island from home, they try to establish some sort of stability on the island so the situation will seem less terrifying. Furthermore, the antagonism becomes more and more prominent between the two boys, Ralph and Jack, Ralph representing civilization while Jack symbolizes savagery and insanity. The continuous “battle” between, Ralph and Jack, on who is the right leader for the boys gradually shifts the group of boys towards savagery. The theme of savagery versus civilization is first proposed by Golding when Ralph creates a rule after he is elected leader of the boys, “We can’t have everyone talking at once. We’ll have to have ‘Hands up’ like at school…Then I’ll give him the conch…I’ll give the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when he’s speaking.” (p.33) The conch symbolizes authority and uniform within the group of boys. Furthermore, as Ralph symbolizes civilization, his decision to use the conch as a way to let others speak is wise because this lets other boys, no matter the age or appearance, to have a chance at speaking up and expressing his opinion with others. With the implication of the new system of “government” the British boys have created a democratic establishment on the island, which exhibits their civilized side of them and how they are trying to imitate the civilized life they had left behind. One of the ways that Golding shows conflict between Ralph and Jack is, Jack, who at first was fearful of killing other living things, begins to accept the darker side of him which eventually transform him into a wild savage who cares only for the hunting of meat. While Ralph, who is the “leader” cares deeply for all and wishes for everyone to be safely rescued. Both of their goals and opinions differ greatly which leads to a separation
